Aboyne Castle is a 13th century castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is 187 km from Edinburgh. It was built by the Bissetts with instructions from the king Edward I. Its position is strategic and helped to control the "Pass of Mounth". The castle passed through various hands before being occupied by the Gordons in 1449 who own the castle today.
The architecture of the castle is diverse and was remodelled in various ways, it now is assymetrical with various extra towers. The view today is very much the work of the repairs in the last 20th century.
The origin of the Gordon clan in Scotland was not Gaelic. The Gordon clan is originally from Normandy. The Gordon family had the predominant power in the northeast of Scotland.
Richard Gordon, the first member of the clan Gordon, has some legends around him. One of them is that he killed an horrible monster from Merse during the reign of Malcom III. This family also supported William Wallace ("Braveheart") and his resistance to England. During the War of Independance, they fought near Robert the Bruce against the English Soldiers, but Sir Adam Gordon died. |
