Achnacarry Castle is the ancestral home of the the Clan Cameron, which is in Achnacarry, about 24km from the northeast of Fort William, Scotland, near the Loch Arkaig. It is very close to the Loch Ness. The original castle was built around 1655 and destroyed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746; a new house in Scottish baronial style was built in 1802.
There is also a museum near the castle for the Clan Cameron that includes the clan's legends, chiefs (lords of the castle), slogans and history.
The origins of Clan Cameron are not clear and there are a lot of theories. A manuscript of the clan says that it is old tradition that the Camerons were descendants of the son of the royal family of Denmark, and that their progenitor was called Cameron from his crooked nose (Scottish Gaelic: cam-shròn). Such nicknames were and are common in Gaelic culture, and they adopted the name.
