Braemar Castle is situated near the village of Braemar in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is a possession of the chief of Clan Farquharson. It is open to the public. The castle was built by the Earl of Mar in 1628 but because they did not support James VII of Scotland in 1689, the castle was burned out by John Farquharson of Inverey, the Black Colonel. In 1715, the Farquharson clan occupied the castle and lived there. The castle has got a lot of ghosts. One is a young woman abandoned in her honeymoon. A piper was seen in the back corridor, too. Sometimes you can also hear the cries of a baby boy. John Farquharson, the Black Colonel of Inverey has been seen in certain rooms, and you can smell his tobacco. The sporran of the family is black and beige and has its insignia. |
"Carn na Cuimbne" or the Cairn of Memory is among the trees on the north bank of the river. It was here where the Clan Farquharson men prepared themshelves for many different battles. Each man left a stone on the ground and removed it when he returned. The stones which remained marked the number of those who died.
