The castle was built in the 13th century, and it is one of Scotland's oldest stone castles. Guarding a strategic location, it was built by the MacDougall lords of Lorn, and the Clan Cambell occupied it in the 15th century. To this day there is a hereditary Captain of Dunstaffnage, although they no longer reside at the castle. Dunstaffnage is open to the public. The prefix dun in the name means "fort" in Gaelic.
The McDonald clan was enemy of the Campbell clan, and Flora MacDonald was a prisioner in the castle. She helped Prince Charles Edward Stewart to escape back to France in 1746, and put a spell on the castle. The ghost of the castle is said to wear a green dress and tell good and bad events which are about to happen to the Campbell family.
